Habitat Boxes

By purchasing an artificial nesting box, you are providing a safe place for our native animals to shelter. The Woodend Lions are proud to partner with the Woodend Men’s Shed to deliver our wildlife nesting boxes to our local community.

Habitat boxes can be mounted on trees, posts, or the side of a house or shed. The best location depends on the type of habitat box and the animals you want to attract.

We can supply a range of habitat boxes for birds and animals including rosella, pardalote, ringtail possum, brushtail possum, duck, phascogale, kookaburra, and micro bat

Location, position and attachment

  • Location – the extent of surrounding suitable habitat and connectivity to native vegetation, the presence of feed trees, such as eucalypts and wattles will influence the success of nest boxes to attract animals.
  • Height – place at a height that deters dogs and foxes, and human vandals. Generally, anything over 3
meters is appropriate. Potential predators include goannas, cats, foxes, snakes, pythons, sugar gliders and birds such as butcherbirds.
  • Orientation and shading – the box opening should face the direction that minimises exposure to wind
and rain. Positioning the box on the south side of the host tree will reduce the amount of direct sunlight it receives during the day.
  • Attachment – make sure the nest box is secure and allow for host tree growth to avoid damage to tree and box.

Other considerations

  • Accessibility: Choose a spot that’s easy to access for maintenance
